Young Guns Shine on Sunday

It’s not every day 3 of the best and brightest young arms all share the bump on the same day, let alone 2 on the same day.

But that very thing happened on Sunday in Arlington when Chase Burns and Jack Leiter faced off at The Barn. And neither disappointed

Burns went 6 Innings with 9 K’s — Leiter reached that milestone in 5. Both only walked one, and allowed one to score. It was a pitchers duel you don’t get to see too often.

Both players were 2nd overall picks in their respective drafts, but neither factored into the decision in a 2-1 Reds win.

Not to be outdone over in the Steel City, former Top 100 prospect, and perhaps most underappreciated arm in the League — Braxton Ashcraft dominated the Orioles to the tune 8 K’s over 6 Innings, also only allowing 1 run.

The game is in a great place with arms — the stuff on these newcomers gets better and better every year. And now these pups are putting up the numbers to back up the hype.

Monday we get the chance to see the grizzled vets get their chance to answer, as deGrom, Sale, and Woodruff take the hill.

Brew Crew Voodoo

As a fan of an NL Central team — there are few things in the world that piss me off quite like the Brewers. They ALWAYS seem to get more out of less. A picture perfect organization who is always pushing in the same direction. And damnit if they aren’t doing it again this season.

After trading away Freddy Peralta, surely there was no way the pitching staff could perhaps become BETTER… right? Well. Enter Kyle Harrison. His 14 K’s in his first 2 starts are tied with CC Sabbathia for the most ever in their first 2 starts in a Brewers uniform.

A guy the Red Sox cast away for a near hitless Caleb Durbin is turning into just another success story for the Brewers player development program

And now, Garrett Mitchell has officially started his breakout. A .991 OPS in 26 PA to start the young season, Mitchell has driven in 11 runs and stolen 3 bags while playing All-Star level defense to boot.

Once Chourio is back, the Brewers will have a claim as the best young outfield in the National League — if not in the Majors.

New Digs for Cup of Coffee

One thing I want to introduce to coverage, to make sure we are hitting every team every week, is a wrap around of the week that was and the week that will be for every team in a given division each day

Here’s the New Schedule:

Monday — AL East

Tuesday — NL East

Wednesday — AL Central

Thursday — NL Central

Friday — NL West

Saturday — AL West

With that, lets get it started:

AL East Wrap Around

In the normal powerhouse division in baseball — just about everyone is struggling right now.

After getting manhandled by the Brewers the Rays saved face and took down the Derek Shelton Brain Trust (TM) in their final two games of this brutal 9 game Midwest road trip to start the season. Back home today.

It’s hard to draw up a worse stretch than losing 2 of 3 to the Rockies and then getting SWEPT by the Contagion White Sox. Losing Alejandro Kirk turned out to be a nightmare that they can’t seem to wake up from.

Nothing like a get right against… THE DODGERS?!?!?! It never ends

They went into Pittsburgh and lost 2 games they had no business losing and then got pummeled on Get-Away Day. The Young Core has been nothing short of a raging disappointment, and the soul of this team hasn’t revealed itself yet.

If they can’t get it right against the White Sox — fresh off a big sweep of the Blue Jays — then it may take a long time to find a spot to fix this before a brutal May schedule

Oof

Odds and Ends

We keep losing good players to injury. Unfortunately the GOAT is the latest

Miracles are happening on this Easter Sunday

Mariners are good at baseball, not at knowing names

But for the record Cole Young knew to follow the gameplan — and hit it where even Jo Adell couldn’t get it

If nobody else does, I see you Tomoyuki Sugano

I have the same number of hits as Young Joc — and so do you

Have a better day than Mr. Pederson everyone.
